One woman escaped what could have been a tragic fate. Her daughter took to Facebook to warn people about the scheme.
Savannah Nguyen of Wisconsin wrote a post about her mother’s recent experience. The mom, Sony, had finished shopping and was returning to her car when she noticed an SUV with tinted windows pulling into a nearby spot. Since the lot was practically empty, it raised a lot of Sony’s internal red flags.
Sony jumped in her car and sped away. That’s when she heard something flapping against her windshield. It had been stuck under her windshield wiper. Later, when she was safe, she inspected the item to see what it was. She was surprised to find it was a ring.
The ring was in a clear bag. On the bag, someone had written, “Free gift sterling silver ring from Kay Jewelers.”
The ring was a trap, meant to distract the lady, according to Nguyen. “Of course a person would be curious and want to read the writing on the bag, but in the two seconds it takes you to grab the bag from under the windshield to read what is on there, it might already be too late. Bad things can happen in the blink of an eye,” she explains.
Nguyen warns everyone about the reality of human trafficking. Nguyen warns, “You don’t think it will happen to you until it does. I stop by the mall by myself all of the time. After this situation, I would not recommend anybody go there by themselves, or go anywhere by themselves for that matter. Especially teenage girls. ALWAYS try to travel in groups, and ALWAYS stay alert in parking lots or public places, especially at night.”
