SESSIONS: SUPREME COURT ABORTION DECISION ‘VIOLATED THE CONSTITUTION’

Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Sen. Jeff Sessions, revealed Tuesday that he continues to believe the Supreme Court ruling which legalized abortion was unconstitutional.

During the Alabama lawmaker’s confirmation hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee, California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein asked: “You have referred to Roe v. Wade as, quote, ‘one of the worst, colossally erroneous Supreme Court decisions of all time,’ end quote. Is that still your view?” Session responded: “It is. It violated the Constitution, and really attempted to set policy and not follow law.”

The Daily Caller pointed out that Trump campaigned as a pro-life candidate, vowing to appoint anti-abortion justices to the nation’s highest court. He has called for the repeal of Roe v. Wade. Sessions, despite his personal opposition to legal abortions, promised to enforce federal laws as attorney general. “It is the law of the land,” he said. “It has been so established and settled for quite a long time, and it deserves respect, and I would respect it and follow it.”

Feinstein then asked Sessions whether the Supreme Court’s sanctioning of gay marriage also is “settled law.” The nominee avoided the question by reiterating his previous statement. “I haven’t said that the woman’s right to choose or Roe v. Wade and its progeny is not the law of the land, and not clear today. So I would follow that law,” he testified.
